If it is broke, disregard. However, if it is just dingy and scatched up, you might try what I just did. I stipped all items from the plastic console. Then wet-sanded out all scratches with 1500 grit sandpaper. Then polished with ?some brand? of plastic "scratch remover / polish". I looks GREAT. Brought back that new dark black look. Now I'm trying to find a silver leafing pen to add the siver stripes back on it, as they were worn off over time...

OK, SO HOW DID IT TURN OUT???
I HAVE A '68 WITH A PRETTY UGLY SHIFT CONSOLE PLATE TOO, AND I HAVE HEARD SO MANY WAYS TO RESTORE IT. ANYONE HAVE ANY OTHER IDEAS? THEY ARE SO RARE, I DON'T EVEN WANT TO SCREW IT UP!

I used a gel pen on my 70 console for the VOLUME and TUNING letters. It worked great! May work for a 68 plate.
It was a creative memories silver pen my wife uses for her photo albums.
Let it dry overnight so it does not smear. After it dries so far so good!

To answer the question "How did it turn out?", above, I just got it back in the car. Looks great, including the silver from the Krylon Silver Leafing Pen. You can order those from any high-end arts store that sells to art students, for about $8. One note: I am guessing the sheen is a tad glassier than original and certainly glossy enough that you need to do the upper console/guage cluster to match. I am guessing you could wipe off the wax portion of the plastic polish/wax with some alcohol when done and knock the sheen down a notch. Also, I would assume time and wear will take care of that sufficiently that I am not worried about it...
