I'm still shopping around and have been kinda leaning towards a manual. It looks like this topic has helped me put the cat in the bag.
4 speed it will be.
Unless of course I find that totally stunning low mileage deal of a lifetime just around the corner that happens to be an automatic.

Vette(s): 1981 Cream exterior, camel interior. Looks great, runs good.
It's good to know how to drive a manual. Years ago when I lived in Georgia I had to buy a manual because I couldn't find a used automatic. Had to learn or walk. Came in handy when I moved back to NY and rented a manual truck. But when it comes to the vette I don't lean one way or the other. Vettes rule anyway!

Yep, manual. My 1st new car, I was living at home and driving to college 100miles a day. I bought a 1980 Toyota with an automatic. My dad called the dealer and said, order a stick. I pick the car up and IM like wtf? Bottom line, smartest move the man ever made for me. Keep in mind Dad has a C5 and he's 70..

yes yes yes, learn to use a manual tranny. Once you learn, you will really enjoy it. It is not that hard to learn. It adds to the experience and fun of driving a vette......

I learned on a late '60's Volkswagen Station Wagon (almost killed a horse and rider) but I am VERY glad my Granddad made me do it!
In 1994 a close friend of mine bought a new Mustang at the Ferd place, called me and asked me to come over to the dealership. Another friend of ours took me over and it was a good thing. This guy bought a stick because he wanted red and that was all they had, but he couldn't get it home
I drove it home for him and began driving lessons. Now he's hooked. Hasn't owned an auto since!

Well, it appears there is a unanimous vote for "yes, learn!" Isn't there someone out there who thinks the car ought to shift itself?!?!?!
So, assuming I learn, the next question is, should my husband teach me? He says he will, but I'm thinkin we could end up divorced if he tries. What about the transmission on the Pony car...Any chance I could end up trashing it????

Back in High School in the late 60's the driver ed car was a 3 speed on the column. "3 on the tree" is that what they called it? It was the only way to learn back then.
Tried to teach my wife on a 79 C20 4 speed pickup years later. Our young son was sitting there getting sick to his stomach and my neck hurt.
She just wanted to be able to drive the truck if I took her car.
Next truck had to be an automatic.
I'm sure a car would be much easier to learn on. That old 3/4 ton clutch was heavy and gears could be hard to find.
It's like a bike, all of a sudden it clicks and you never loose it. At first you may find yourself going out of the way to avoid lights and stop signs on hills.
If you like performance cars you should go for it.
Is your husband a patient man?
