Spring Construction Updates 2014

We thank you for your patience as we work to build the most efficient and safest roadways possible. 2014 is going to be our biggest construction year ever, with $1.4 billion in capital spending in improvements throughout the Tollway system.

Projects include rebuilding 160 lane miles of roadway, repairing 70 bridges and building or improving 20 interchanges. To stay informed about projects that will impact your travel, please visit the Illinois Tollway website for frequent updates on our progress.

I-90 In 2014, we will complete rebuilding and widening the 37-mile western segment of I-90 between Randall Road in Elgin and I-39 near Rockford and make preparations to begin rebuilding and widening work in the 25-mile eastern segment from the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to Randall Road. Work includes rebuilding the mile-long westbound section of I-90 between I-294 and the Kennedy Expressway, as well as interchange improvements, reconstruction of local crossroad bridges, retaining walls and noisewalls and reconstruction of the Fox River Bridge.

EOWA The Elgin O'Hare Western Access Project moves forward with rehabilitating and widening the existing Elgin O'Hare Expressway, now known as Illinois Route 390, from Irving Park Road to Meacham Road/Medinah Road and reconstructing the roadway from Meacham Road/Medinah Road to Rohlwing Road. Work also includes rebuilding the I-290 Interchange at Illinois Route 390, building a new Rohlwing Road Interchange and building a new diverging diamond interchange at I-90 and Elmhurst Road.

I-94 I-294 In 2014, Phase One of the new interchange to connect the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and I-57 will be complete, providing 75 percent of the project benefits to the traveling public. North Tri-State Tollway (I-94) work includes ramp improvements at the Belvidere Road and Grand Avenue interchanges and Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) work includes repairs on five interchanges.

I-88 Rehabilitation of I-88 between the Aurora Toll Plaza and Illinois Route 59 will be completed this year to provide a smoother riding surface for the traveling public. Improvements to local crossroad bridges over I-88 will be completed by late fall.

I-355 Maintenance and improvements are scheduled at various bridges and ramps, including repairs on the entrance ramp connecting northbound I-355 and Ogden Avenue to westbound I-88 in Lisle and the exit ramp connecting southbound I-355 to eastbound I-80 in New Lenox.

Drop it and Drive logoDrop It and Drive

It's time to Drop it and Drive. The law prohibiting the use of hand-held cellphones while operating vehicles on all Illinois roadways has been in effect since January 1.

Drivers caught using a cellphone face a $75 fine for the first offense. Repeated violations will cost $150 each and may lead to suspension of driving privileges.

If It's Flashing - Move Over!

Move Over for Emergency Vehicles

"Scott's Law," known as the "Move Over Law," requires drivers approaching police or other emergency vehicles stopped along the roadway to:

  1. Reduce speed
  2. Change lanes if possible
  3. Proceed with caution

Illinois State Police troopers and Tollway roadway maintenance staff are on duty around-the-clock to serve our customers. They maintain the safety of our roadways and, most importantly, are the first on the scene to help drivers in need.

Please protect those who protect us.
