Emergency Parts and Tools for the Trip

The trip to Carson City will be our first long trip in the Vette.  What tools and spare parts do you guys recommend we carry (given, of course, the limited space)?  We've only had our Vette since September and the longest trip I've done was the 50 mile trip from Gresham to Hood River.  We have had it in for a tune up and new brakes.  There's a lot we still don't know about the car.

You can buy an emergency kit for something like $30 at Costco. It has some basic stuff like some medical supplies, an emergency power supply, reflective triangles, etc. Not a whole lot, but as you say, you are limited for space.

Best thing is probably your auto club road service card and a credit card, plus a cell phone and charging adapter.

Before you leave, have the entire car gone over...oil change, new filters, tire balance, air pressure and alignment, wheel bearings checked and packed, engine tuned properly, wiper blades etc.

Don't forget to check the spare tire and carry an assortment of fuses.

While at Costco also look for a mechanics tool kit.  They are usually dark gray in color, compact in size, and have the basic tools needed for light, roadside repairs.

There were several threads with some of this info last year for the 2006 Gathering. Just basic common sense, really. A few quarts of engine oil, a jug of water, quart of brake fluid, and basic hand tools. Duct tape(for sealing windows in da rain, or repairing leaky coolant hoses), maybe a spare hose or two, a small hydraulic jack(don't wanna trust the factory jack on the road...)

I'm sure this thread will fill in as the days go by...

Didn't someone say they were pulling there Vette on a trailer, just wondering if there would enough space to strap down a cool full of spare parts and tools  Maybe a little far-fetched but maybe each person in the convoy could buy one item to throw in like belts, hoses, quarts oil, coolant, or the likes. cilrah2007-02-03 22:31:09

With all the stuff being suggested, don't forget to leave a little bit of room for a gym bag with a week's worth of clothing and toiletries. That's about all you'll have room for.

Maybe you should ship your clothes ahead either FedEx or UPS to the hotel. That will leave space for tools.

Karen, with as many Caravan Members we have and I think one Corvette is on a trailer and the short distances between pickups you will be OK, we can call ahead if we need anything. If she run 50 miles and was OK, she'll run OK. Check all belts, fluids, air. Last year I carried spark plug wires because I would burn them on the headers, fix that with asbestos boots. Between us all we will have enough tools and knowledge, and like Joel said..FaithLots of that..I will give you a hand held radio on the trip so you can keep in touch with me, if'in you have trouble, help will be on the way...Terryspielman52007-02-04 09:44:54

Maybe as part of your wardrobe you might want a pair of coveralls so you can crawl underneath to fix the drooping exhaust pipe or see where that leak is coming from.

Good point Terry  Even me who's scared to take the Pacer on such along trip is starting to feel better about it.  The only work I have planned for the trip is a new carb, new valve covers (for looks and leaks only), a good tune-up, and have all the wheel barings repacked cause I have no idea when they were done. If time and money permits I may have a new radiator installed also, it leaking very slow from parts unknown. I'm also having the local Corvette shop do a good inspection for anything I can't see. cilrah2007-02-04 11:52:34
