Just a heads-up for those of you that use radar detectors:
These states include:
Radar detectors are illegal for passenger vehicles in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Be aware that police in Virginia often use "Radar Detector Detectors" to find and ticket drivers using these devices!
In all other states, they are generally legal for private use. But worthy of noting: While the detector itself may be legal in these most states, mounting it on the windshield is prohibited in several states because it can be classified as an "obstruction of view"
These states include:
- California
- Minnesota
- Pennsylvania
- New Jersey

The last radar detector I was associated with was installed by the first owner of "The Beast". I forget the name of the brand or exactly where the primary part of the unit was located but it was somewhere under the nose of the car with a very small secondary unit in the righthand side of the instrument cluster. Didn't use it much but it did save my butt a few times.
Wonder if the "windshield obstruction" rule also applies to GPS units. 🤔

Sure, you can use your radar detector in NJ, it's perfectly legal.... Just don't mount it on your windshield! Typical.

So get a mirror mount.
Good thought but I'm thinking that might still be considered as an obstruction of view.

Valentine One radar detector eliminated the leakage in order to prevent radar detector detectors from detecting them.

So just for grins I tried attaching my Garmin GPS mount to the inside rear view mirror - and it FIT (but just barely)! Popped the Garmin on the mount and it held. It does block about 3/4 of the view in the mirror but it does not block any more of the forward view than normal - except for the power cord dangling down. I'll just have be more diligent in checking the outside mirrors. Plus it doesn't hinder the movement of the sun visor. So I'd consider that a WIN in my book.

Most mirrors on newer cars have 12 volts to them that you can tap into and eliminate the dangling cord.

Noted - the interior "dome" light is in the mirror so there is power there. Won't have time today to figure how to tap into it but something to look into after getting back from the Gathering. Thanks!
