a few car guys suggested I get larger tires for my 76 to fill the wheel wells better, I bought the car with 215/60/15 mounted on chrome rally wheels. I was thinking of 255/60/15, will these fit ok,and does anyone know what tires came stock on the 76

"G" or "H" 70s were the most used for that era. The 70s will look taller and fill the wheel well better, but will be a wee bit narrower. Just a small opinion.

GR70-15 is the only GM authorized tire for a '76 Corvette. The current cross reference tire is P225/70R15. 60 series tires weren't authorized until the '78 model year when some inner panel changes were made so the tires would fit without interference. Some earlier than '78 cars will take 60 series without problems and some cannot...it just seems to be a car by car thing.
The only way you'll know if the P255/60R15's will fit without clearance problems is to try it...not just turn the wheels while stationary, but drive it, turn it, hit some bumps, etc. That's the only real way you'll find out.
Your best bet is to put a set of the proper P225/70R15's on the car and you'll have no problems. They'll fill the wheel wells quite nicely.

255/60R15's on my 72. The only time I have any rub is in reverse if I cut the wheels all the way and they just barely rub. I like the way these look on my car.
