I was just sitting around yesterday staring at a tree when I got to thinking, Hmmm....... I wonder how much clearance there is between the underside of the hood and air cleaner cover on my Vette ?
Since I just have to know important stuff like this I started pondering the type of instrument I might need to achieve this information.

"...Went in the house and got some of my wife's floral foam, soaked it with water, put it in a zip-loc bag (to keep my greasy engine from getting wet) and placed the little bundle on the highest point of the air cleaner....slammed the hood and "viola" a perfect imprint of the clearance........which in my case is exactly one inch.

Hey if it don't hit it's ok. We don't have much room under there with the stock hood.

You can do the same thing with modeling clay, or...Play-Doh.
Not all year cars have the same amount of clearance, tho. The '73-'76 cars had a bit more than the others, due to the cowl induction hood, as did the big-block/LT1 cars, tho those were still tight. And of course, the L88/ZL1 cars.
1" sounds about right, tho, for most cars. Don't know that I would "slam" the hood down, but...I guess it didn't create any "extra" clearance by doing it that way!

I get that looking at the tree thing often. It scares my wife to see it. She knows that I'm about to do something I call fun which in most cases she calls unorthodox.... (God Love Her).
I am going to keep your method in mind in the months to come as the OEM intake is removed for a new Performer upgrade. I know that it will fit I am just curious as to how mauch room is left.... Hope the leaves are starting to bud by then... Tuxblacray 2007-11-18 07:35:06

Now the question would be,, How much room should there be from the top of the air cleaner to the underside of the hood?
To breathe properly and not have any heat problems, is that one inch the minimum?

I don't think I've ever seen any specs on this particular clearance, but I'm pretty sure 1" is about what I've seen on most every Corvette(Shark) that I've seen, that had the stock induction set-up. I'm sure some may have more, some less...engine/trans mounts will make a difference, as well as body mounts, and even frame "sag".
The '73-'76 cars that have the cowl induction set-ups have a rubber seal on top of the air cleaner assy. to seal it to the hood. It squishes(tech term) that seal down pretty well at the front, but not so much at the rear. I've never actually measured it, but I bet there's prolly an inch at the front, and 2" at least at the rear of the air cleaner assy. The adapter ring that the seal actually fits on to sits well above the actual top of the air cleaner, so there's even more clearance for the filter itself.
This is getting interesting now...I may have to go check it!!
