There are many quality heads on the open market. It all depends what kind of performance level you are looking for. Aluminum heads are great.(Less weight). But shock cooling can damage (warp) a good set of al heads. Edelbrock makes a good set of al heads. Merlin makes a good set of Iron heads. Just what ever you want to do with the engine. Price will vary from type of material and vendor.

I have a set of Edelbrock 6089s. 64 cc aluminum heads. Excellent product. They run great!!

I also have a L-48,it was suggested by several to get the Vortec heads and matching intake.Folks say it will bump the comp. ratio and flow MUCH better.Around $500.00/pr....I think.

I put a set of Vortecs on a '76 L48 and was very pleased! It did increase the compression and they flowed very well out of the box. You do have to buy an intake, but you are probably going to do that any way! Due to the newer intake bolt locations, you can not put your chrome distributor shielding back on.
