I don't know when GM decided to restrict the speedometer to 85 mph but I have an L81 and my 4 speed will reach that in 3rd and I believe the motor to be original ?? My quandry being, I've been told if you exceed the maximum limit on these you will certainly trash the inner workings of the speedo. Anyone have experience to the contrary?I've owned this one for 2 yrs. and I've yet to open it up.

Open her up! you will not damage the speedo. The 85 mph speedo was put in to keep people from speeding! HA! We all know how that worked.

Reid, Does that apply to a 160 mph speedo too?

Driving past the 85mph limit of the speedo will not hurt it.
Now, if you wish to exceed the limit of the 160mph speedo, please see the post entitled "How to beat a Speeding Ticket"
