Wow, I just ran across this thread. I just bought my first C3 yesterday and have to wait until next week for it to arrive. I was half expecting to spend a year looking for the right car and got lucky about a month into my search.
I was looking for a 71-72 Steel Cities Gray (400/988) LS5/4spd and found a 71 that was originally 988 and is currently "for sale red". I found it Tuesday, flew to CA Wednesday and bought it...so now I wait for it to be transported to WA.
The paint looks so good that I may just stick with the red for a while. 
The C3 is going to create a major space problem, so may end up selling the C4 as much as I hate to do it. I guess there are worse problems to have than too many Corvettes.
