Thank your for your friendly welcome.

I just bought a 1971 small block which is said to be
a LT1 . At least the last owner and the the tag below the
shifter says so.
Can you help me to confirm that ?
Thanks in advance

Kind regards
Bergman

Welcome to the Shark Tank, Bergman!!

Enjoy the site!

Check for the engine code/ID# on the block. Look HERE for the codes/numbers.

CGZ = LT1/Holley carb/solid lifter/4spd
CGY = LT1/ZR1pkg w/M22 trans/special suspension
CJL = Base 270hp/Q-jet carb/4spd
CGT = Base 270hp/Q-jet/auto trans
CJK = Base 270hp/Q-jet/auto trans...(very limited use of this engine code, but it has been documented as being used.)

Hi

thanks again for the warm welcome.

Joel , i appreciate your valuable hints .
Unfortunately my car doesn t run with the  original block.
Being a 1971 it was imported with a non original 327
and now has a modified 350 with 1st overbore , Edelbrock
manifold , Hooker headers , ported heads and  Holley 750 cfm .
Nice to have but non original.
Original is the 4 speed gear box.
Apart from that the only hint might come from the VIN .
I d like to bring the car closer to the original looks and of
course a LT 1 confirmation could strengthen my spirit.
The only exterior mods are American Racing wheels ( no ,sadly no
Torque Thrust ) a L88 hood ( need a Lt1 ), a rear window with CORVETTE engraved ( that i urgently want to replace ) and a 4 barrel Monza exhaust.
The good thing is that the last owner did no more than 5500 KM in
15 years ( never driving in the rain ; suspension is absolutely clean )
so the engine is barely run in and the car sits on a Rancho suspension.
Interior is very clean and some parts are new . Only downside comes
from the fact that for example the dash pad had been resprayed in saddle with a very glossy effect giving a very LATEX rubber look.
Does anyone have a hint how to get rid of the glossy look ?

Unfortunately, Chevy did not include the engine code in the vin until '72. There are other clues, tho. The tach will have a higher redline in an LT1, and there are heavier springs/sway bars. I think the radiator/fan shrouds were also different....

Use a small bit of thinner and gently wipe the dash, then let it dry.  If you get it too damp, it may get shiner.  A small amount of brake fluid will also work well.  Use very little, and wipe it back off, and let dry.

If you rub too much, it will take the paint off and ruin the finish completely.  This is very touchy.  Practice on somthing you don't care about.

It's a bit safer to just take a 3M pad and very gently rub the pad. Again, a light touch.

The best thing is to take the pad out and refinish it the right way.  If you goof on the above, you will do a complete refinish.

seems that the interior work is somehow digital. Get it right with patience and the right mixture or ruin it completely. Thanks god the market offers plenty of replacements panels in case it goes wrong.
Be sure i ll have a sensible try , just to avoid wearing sun glasses all the time due to glossy dash. .. and i will report how it worked.

Isn t there a general register that can tell which  VIN was delivered with which option to xy dealer. GM must know what they sold .
For example you can contact Porsche , tell them the VIN and they will be able to tell you the options , country and the relevant dealer it was delivered to.

In any case i will have a closer look on the tach.
Suspension  has been completely modified. So hard to tell if sway bars are original or not.

I m already keen to give the car the final ( more original )touch it deserves.
