hii,
I know this question has been asked most of the time. BUT what I what I cannot convince myself is for cars which is the most efficient speed. Most of the ads and promotions in india promote a speed of 50-60 or 40-60 km/hr. However most of the online forums and auto experts suggest a ideal speed between 50-55 mph. Now. 50 mph and 50kmph are not same. 50 mph is way quicker than 50 kmph.
So experts, what is your take on the ideal speed for maximum mileage? Also, India and technology here are not at all backward. Hence I don't think an explanation like "50 kmph is ideal for indian cars" would hold true. So given a flat highway of 100 km (which we surely have in india) would driving at 50kmph or at 50mph would give me maximum mileage??
Thanks!

I don’t think the ideal gas mileage is based on speed, but rather on RPM. The resulting speed is determined by transmission and rear end gearing. The same RPM will give a wide range of mph based on your gearing, but the engine performance is based on the RPM and the speed is just the mathematical result of that. In other words, two vehicles with the same engine but different transmissions and rear ends, will get their best gas mileage at the same RPM but different MPH. That’s my $0.02

My '96 LT1 gets the best mileage at about 1800 rpm on the highway.  I have the optional "Performance" rear end.
