Vette(s): Silver 1974 Convertible - L82 4 speed
Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.
2008 Jetstream Blue Convertible
The car is still silver, but it is not the original paint. I don't know how old the paint is. I am the fifth owner, and although I was in contact with the 3rd owner, he gave me very limited information and only replied once to my e-mails.

What does the clay bar do? Never mind. I just checked out the other active thread on the clay bar.
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

I use the Mequires Gold as well but the liquid, works the best from what I have seen. I just wipe the liquid on the car every now and then, little rubbing and wipe it off after a couple minutes. The dust falls right off. And she shines real nice too.

I am going to say something that might sound stupid or make me look stupid, but I was at a show two weekends ago and my and my wife's jaw dropped when this Deep Black 67 Chevelle pulled in. This car was top notch and a World of Wheels winner about 8 years ago.
The guy keeps a small chain bolted to his frame on the rear of the car and before he pulls into wherever he is showing the car, he drops the chain and removes static electricity from the car. I could not believe how nice his paint was after 5 years. We were all collecting dust and he had none, I was shocked especially when he showed me the chain.

That makes sense to me because I can remember when gas delivery trucks used to have a chain dragging from their axle.

Ron, I agree. Folks ask me when I'm going to paint the vette 'cause it looks like primer from a distance ( hence the nickname "Stealth"). Think I'll paint it a slightly different shade of silver this time (new paint coming ) with lots of clearcoat.

You can do a quick test to get some sense of what the paint is like -- apply some rubbing compound to a polishing pad and use it on an inconspicuous area of the car. If the pad shows some color (silver in your case) it's most likely single stage paint. You'd be doing the same with a clear coat paint, except that you can't see the clear coat as it's transferred to the pad.
