I am also trying to restore the shine to my 78 aluminum wheels and I need some advice. I hand rubbed them with Mother's aluminum polish and they look much better, but nowhere as nice as I have seen on some. Plenty of black residue when I rubbed them with the paste. Would you also recommend using a linen pad on a drill and what type of polish should I use with it?

The buffing wheel will do the trick ,,,, some folks tend to like one polish more than another . Get a polish intended for aluminum that is not clear coated ie mothers ,etc

Barry,
If can get some aluminum wheel acid from a detail shop or supplier and wash your wheels with that first it take a lot of the oxidation off. Then come behind that with a edge wheel and your polish. Wenol makes a real good cleaner and polish. Good luck it takes times.

Thanks for the help! Is an Edge Buffer the buffing attachent for a 3/8 drill that only has the buffer on the sides? What type of cover is best to use on the wheel?

Barry,
An edge is the buffing wheel that you are speaking off. You can get them at Home Depot in a get that comes with compound and polish or just the wheel itself. It is a cotton cover and does a real fine job.
