No first gear when hot

on a trip to california, my wife and I noticed that the car would not shift down to first gear while using the Paddle shifters. I tried both sides of the paddles and no luck. We went into a Mall, shopped for a while 1.5 hours, came back out and the car shifted fine. Any one else with this issue.
