'Mustang and Corvette Reborn' On Travel Channel

Though I haven't been able to find a replay of "Rebuilding an Icon", I did see that the Travel Channel has a show on the new Corvette and Mustang this Saturday, on its "Kings of the Road" series . . .

I saw this. My TiVo picked it up for me automatically!

It was a really great show. It was actually pretty neat to see the info on the Mustang too. I can't belive the price differnce between the Vette and Mustang! Of course, the Mustangs performance isn't anywhere near that of the Vette.

Anyone else see it?

I thought the program was great as well. The truth is - and I know all of you GM guys will jump on me - is that I've always been a Ford guy. I've been a Ford guy my whole life, and I'm 53. My new C6 is the first Chevrolet I've ever owned.

There was a part of me that was thinking that I should wait for the new Mustang to come out before I bought a new car. But, you know, when you really make a comparison - there is none. I mean, the Corvette wins hands down - if you can afford to pay the difference.

The new Mustang will be a value for sure, and it will come in at $15,000 to $20,000 less than a comparably equipped C6. But, you get what you pay for. If you want 400 HP and 4.something 0-60 speed with cornering, stability and great luxury features, the Corvette delivers.

Also, there's this "retro design" thing. One of the things that the "Mustang and Corvette Reborn" program showed was the very divergent design philosophies between the Corvette and Mustang design teams. GM is carrying the design into the future with the Corvette, and Ford is looking to the past with the Mustang. I think this retro thing has limited long-term appeal. Retro design may look cool at first, but I think it will become dated very quickly.

Any other thoughts on that debate?

I don't see alot of the Prowlers, T-Birds, or SSRs on
the roads. The PT Cruiser seems to do pretty well but that is
probably because it is more utilitarian. Having a lower
price doesn't hurt either. Some people thought that GM
should have had a '53 look for the 50th Anniversary. The
after market rendition looks ok and interesting but I
don't think alot of them went out the door either. Was that
the cost or appearance factor that limited that number?
I think, for the most part, people want to move on.
