Chirping L6

My engine has a few problems and i wonder if they are all connected.

The air conditioner quit. The steering would periodically tighten up when the "charge starting system" message came on. The engine would occasionally stall at a stop light, parking lot, etc.

When the a/c stopped a " chirping" sound started. It sped up when is sped up and slowed down at a full stop.  The engine seemed to drive as normal.

The dealer told me I need a new crankshaft! 

Does anyone have any knowledge of these problems?
