Active handling VS. Competitive driving mode

I had a rather interesting experience powering around a hairpin turn in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. They had just re-paved the roads, the air temp was in the 50's and my tires weren't totally warmed up, so I should have known better but, here's what happened. I was powering around the turn at a relatively sane speed (40 or so) when I experienced a slight case of oversteer. No big deal I think till the Active handling kicked in. Suddenly the car is violently rocking back and forth, slamming my elbow into the center console. The application of the rear brakes by the active handling made a rather benign situation into a real unexpected handling moment. The switching of the application of right then left rear brake was overcompensating each other to the point of nearly making me drift into the on coming lane. Now I question the ability of the Active handling to help control the car.
Has anyone had a similar experience and do you think that the Competitive Driving Mode (Z06) is a better choice for road course type driving, such as on a track?
