A few months ago I bought a used '94 Coupe.  When my fuel gauge gets near a quarter of a tank, going around a corner or accelerating briskly will cause the fuel pressure to drop and the engine to lean surge and stumble.

When I test drove the car, the fuel gauge was showing only two bars and indicated 30-40 miles of range.  After a few miles, it was down to one bar, then it quit running!  I ran it out of gas!

Anyone else have similar problems?   I'm not letting my fuel gauge to far below 1/2 before I am filling up.

another forum???Shocked. seriously that was a good write up. it makes it a lot easier to do something when you can see actual pics along with the write up. let us know how you make out.

Without reading the write-up from the "other" forum(), I would say it sounds like perhaps the "sock" filter/strainer on your pick-up has fallen off, OR there is a hole/split in the rubber hose from the pump to the outlet on the sender unit. This happens all the time, and can cause this issue when the fuel level gets low like that.
Of course, the gauge could be off, too.

Mine did that also and I'm too--lazy, cheap, don't care too much about it.
I do what I did on my motorcycle, reset the ODO, when I fill up.
When I get near the 350 mile indicated, I refill the tank.
If youn want to fiox it, that site has goog info.
Good luck.

SayWhen, Thanks for the link to the article.  I found it interesting, but been there done that, didn't get the tee-shirt.   I think I will pull the fuel pick up and see what is going on in there.

Sounds like this may be common on the C4.   The fuel pickup might just be high up in the tank.  A look see will tell me for sure.  Shouldn't be too hard to get the pump, pickup, and sender out of the top of the tank.  At least you don't have to drop the tank.

taking it out of the tank is a breeze. should only take about 15-20 min to get it out. take off fuel door and the gasket around gas filler neck, unplug electrical connection and d/c the lines and take out the 9 10mm bolts and it should lift right out. good luck.
