jonneyone said: what about the egr valve.............sticking open......are your plugs fould out.  if the egr sensor was bad it would have a code however the egr valve it self is stuck open when the eng is hot a lot of black smoke out the tail pipes.... check your factory shop manual for your con....

if the egr was stuck open the car would run rough and probably not run.  i had had a bunch of problems with mine when i first bought it as who ever worked on it was just plain stupid. at one point it was blowing out black out of the exhaust. between all the things i replaced (somethings twice) it got corrected but i cant tell you what did it. what i did find out that you have to watch with some of the parts are the same as what you take out.

bought a map sensor from the local auto store and installed it. readings on scanner got worse. went to another auto store and they asked me for the numbers on the original. asked why they needed them and they told me there were 3 different map sensors that could fit it. local auto stores sometimes just stock the most popular types.

you really need to use a scanner to see what is going on. with all the electronics and computer controlled things you cant guess anymore. wonder also if the ecm is bad. another thing is that when it happened to mine, i wound up replacing the exhaust system as it got clogged up with all the black soot going through it.

i agree , you need diagnostic equipment and a good factory shop manual. to fix running issues.  the day's of part swaping and guessing is over..if your not an experance mechanic that deals with these proplems make sure you have a shop that knows your vette in side and out. also have a parts store that knows alot about vettes . just my opinion

Guy's I finally figured it out. glad I changed all the sensors three of them were indeed bad. I decided to change the only thing that I haven't changed and bought a Stage I chip and sure enough one of the previos owners had put the chip in upside down. which put it in field test mode. so it would run but not within the program. hence 3.63 miles to the gallon. after changing the chip I can now say she runs perfect and my last tank of fuel I averaged 23 miles to the gallon on a hiway trip. Thank you all for your insight! if not for checking all the stuff you suggested I would not have had the insight to change the chip. But who would put one in wrong to begin with that is my question?and not notice that the car was mucked up. Anyway thanks fella's!
