Can anyone tell me when the fan is supposed to be on? The fan in the front of my car doesn't seem to be working. Is this fan controlled by the AC or for cooling the radiator?
I checked the fuse and it's fine. The wires unfortunately are all bound up with black electrical tape.

The inner fan or fans normally come on when the A/C is off somewhere in the 235 degree area and cools things down to about the 225 range and back again. With the A/C on, temperatures should not go over around 215. The front fan should come on ONLY when the A/C is on and the temperature is around that 220 degrees or so range unless it is bad. You could try running a hot wire down to the front fan only to test the fan itself, being careful not to put 12 volts to the fans ground wire. If it comes on the fan should be alright. After that, if the front fan doesn't come on when the A/C is on and temperatures are up there, then try checking out the sensor units on the engine.

there is usually a relay for the fan(s). on my 90 they are mounted on the side frame of radiator. when i turn my a/c on one fan runs (i have 2 fans) to keep it from getting too hot. as was stated the fans for cooling engine usually come on in the 225-230 range. check a manual for where the fan relays are.

I have an '85 as well and recently went through a cooling fan issue. The inner fan should come on between 225-228 degrees and does most of the cooling. The front fan is an aux fan that should be controlled by the switch in the drivers side cylinder head. It is my understanding (according to my factory service manual) that not all cars were equipped with the front fan which is smaller than the inner fan. Your cooling fan relay should be mounted to the inner fender well housing on the drivers side. Check your wiring as that can be a problem (and was on mine).

The auxiliary fan should turn on at 238* and is controlled by temp. alone. As stated above some of the '85s only had one main fan...it's possible you haven't noticed the aux. fan running simply because the temp. switch hasen't seen 238*'

The way to test the circuit would be to remove the wire connector from the temp switch on the pass. side head (between cylinders #6 and #8) and ground that wire (dark green)....if the wiring/relay and fan are good, the fan should run. There is a fusible link which feeds the relay which is "hot" all the time.
BTW--- the ign.switch needs to be on for the above test.

My 85 only has 1 big fan that I can see. My car hasn't reached 238 either so it probably hasn't come on.

I have an 85 as well and have been wondering the same things, I never see it running. I read somewhere that it should run when the ignition is first turned on but engine isn't running. Does anyone know if this is true? I also have only one fan.
