I saw a 84 vette on e-bay for sale today, it had a third brake light. does anyone know if an 84 vette had one of these from the factory? as far as i know they didn't have one.  i e-mailed the seller about this, his reply was it came from the factory that way. i find this very interesting.

A Center High Mounted Signal Light (CHMSL) – a third center brake light – was added in 1986 to comply with safety regulations.

I'd have to wonder if that back glass and setup was from a different Corvette 1986 or newer...  has the car been in an undisclosed accident?

'86 and up only. The hatch glass is different, so in order to add the CHMSL, you would have to change the glass. If the guy insists it came from the factory like that, he's mistaken...he was prolly told that by whomever he bought the car from.
Some owners HAVE changed the hatch so they could have the CHMSL....I had a friend in our local club that did it on his '85.

Accurately, it's 86 to 90 coupes, then 91-95 ZR-1 only.  The 84-85 is the same as 91-up non-ZR-1.

I never knew the glass was different for the CHMSL. My parts fiche reflects this though. Interestingly enough, the glass used with CHMSL was listed as discontinued as of Nov 01, the date of my fiche. The glass used in non-CHMSL was still available.

The glass has added holes in it to accommodate the studs to mount the light. Other than that, the glass is the same, afaik.
