Greetings to all. I also have been to the N.C.M. and seen the Only Authorized 1984 C4 Corvette. It's white and poorly painted. I also have pictures of it, Somewhere!

Quote from theCorvette Black Book:

"The 1984 Corvette was introduced in March of 1983. Because of its late release and since it met all the 1984 federal requirements, Chevrolet General Manager Robert Stemple decided to skip the 1983 model year. The result was a very long 1984 production run …

Wrong

You’ve misquoted

It reads :

“… The result was a very long 1984 MODEL production run …”

One more time :

Chevrolet skipped the 1983 model year

Chevrolet did not skip the 1983 production year

(And you wonder where all the never ending misinformation re the 83/84 production comes from - graphic example. And keep in mind the article opens with stating production of the C4 Corvette started in 1984. No it didn’t. It started on 3 January 1983.)

I updated the wording at the top of this thread to make it clear that 1984 was the first Model Year C4s were sold as.

I have a book (somewhere?) about the development of the Corvette, and it said that the factory workers, when they heard the all the 83's were to be scrapped, they hid one, and that is the one that has survived.

Totally erroneous. Not a farthing of truth/accuracy.
The endless amount of erroneous information re Chevrolet skipping the 1983 MODEL year is like Wack-A-Mole.

Just consider this little piece.

Originally read C4 production started in 1984. ( It’s now been amended)

It started 3 January 1983.

Then there’s the quote from The Black Book - which is misquoted !

And we’re just scratching the surface.

Now about the “story” about the factory workers… hiding a car so it wouldn’t get crushed.

The only connection to what really occurred is :
There was a car to be crushed that by a set of circumstances - too long to explain here unless Adam wants to fill a page or two or three - that was not crushed.

Now I’m summarizing another page or two or three of the real story of how/why it escaped the crusher and fast forwarding to :

The car was not hidden - it was put aside and - forgotten.

For a long time. As in years. One day a new manager discovers it. He/they figure out it’s one of the cars that were crushed - but it wasn’t.

It’s been neglected so they decide to spruce it up and repaint it and … put it on display.

Here it is

Nice job disguising it huh !

Hiding it !

I can just imagine if they had “thought bubbles” above their heads :
“I don’t know. I think one or two more stanchions and they’ll never notice it”

And skipping over another couple of pages of explanation THAT car is in fact the one that’s on display at the National Corvette Museum fully restored to its pre crusher state.

My most humble apologies for missing one word. My "seek and ye shall find" method of typing caused the error. To my thinking, a very debatable topic to be sure, model year and production year are one in the same. In past multiple decades the lines between model years, production years and introduction years have blurred considerably across all makes and models, domestic and imports.

To that end, all things considered "normal", the 1983 Corvette model year would have started production in the late summer of 1982, as noted by the presence of 1983 model year cars for the preview in December of 1982. Due to a variety of reasons, that I will not care to debate, the 1983 Corvette model year model year was skipped while the rest of the Chevrolet model lines, to my knowledge, were not. From what I have read no 1983 model year Corvettes were sold to the public.

You are correct in saying Corvettes were produced in calendar year 1983, as the 1984 model year. The 1984 model year production ran from early in the calendar year 1983 well into the calendar year of 1984 to get back in step with the "normal" model year introductions cycle.

As a side note to this model year/production year craziness, all 1970 model year Corvettes were produced in calendar year 1970.

My 2014 Chevy Silverado was built in August of 2013. It's a 2014. 🤷‍♂️

Here is some pretty definitive proof of the production date of the first ever Model Year 1984 Corvette:

So..., Is this 01 numbered car the same as the #23 car that is in the museum? If it is, why are they getting rid of it? If there are now TWO possible 83' Corvettes out there, where has it been? Are there misrepresentations of facts and evidence of the cars still in existence? A previous post somewhere by a viewer said he had a 83' and was driving it as a personal car. I agree that cars were built it 83' and branded as 84s', or other years and vehicles were in the same issue. Just wondering. Thanks.
