hi all,

i have a silly one....question that is......owned my C4 since 87...replaced the A/C compressor couple years ago after i sold my 2004 corvette in our family downsizing economics...real bummer but i owned outright the  84...no payments feels so good.

so now as a small project i would like to convert my a/c from 12 to 134. have done it on one import i own...easy kit...just fittings and install freon after vac all the 12 out.

can it be that simple for my 84??

If the A/C is working well now, then it can be that easy...but...I would highly recommend replacing the dryer, and then removing the compressor to get as much of the old oil out of the system as possible. The PAG/Ester oils that are needed for using R134 are not all that compatible with the oils used in R12 systems, tho they will work together in small amounts.

Don't do it. You won't be happy with the results. Just use R290 (Propane). I use Coleman. Compatible with R12 lube and it has better heat transfer. Of course you will need to do this yourself as it is officially illegal for techs to do this. It’s the refrigerant of choice in Europe and the Far East. Been running it for years. Black on black in Florida. Cheap and works great.

i just did this to my 84  the only thing my gm dealer told me was replce the dryer. so i located an origal one . my ac works great.  it was cheep to do the convertion. dyer cost 24.00 evacuate sytem and check for leaks and recharge 74.00 plus tax.  not bad. how ever i have heard of the propane thing before. hey if it works that great.  i just couldn't beat the cost fron my gm dealer.

I was shocked when I first used my AC after getting my '87 last summer. Worked tons better than my newer fancy pants cars ever did. Go figure, 26 years old. Then again, I have a 30 year old fridge in the garage that's going strong. That R12 was becoming a real problem because when cars were scrapped, nobody cared what spewed into the air. Hoses were just cut to get the engines out. I should check with a HVAC tech to see what they do with an older commercial system.
