Vette(s): 1996 Grand Sport, many custom mods,383 Stroker, 430 HP, nitrous, killer Alpine stereo.
I am considering buying a 1996 C4. Can anyone tell me exactly where the VIN# is stamped on the engine block of an LT4?

Pictures would be great!

It is either on the block just below the head on passenger front right next to the water pump tube top bolt. but they also put them on the block next to the oil filter.

LT1 and LT4 have two stamp pads. The assembly date and engine suffix code ore on the pad at the RF of the engine.  The VIN derivative is on the LR of the engine. About even with the upper bell-housing bolt.  This pad is difficult to find, if you haven't had to find one before, and is often rusty and illegible unless cleaned. It is straight-down to the rear of the valve cover, even with the outboard edge of the valve cover. Not easy unless it's pointed out to you.

While the engine is a good place to begin, there's a LOT more to "matching numbers" than the VIN derivative on the block matching the VIN on the dashboard. Good Luck.

This is a 4.3 V6. The VIN is for a 92 Typhoon.  But the pad and location is identical to the LT4. The font used on LT4 is different that shown too.
