I have a 1988 Targa V8.  The smog pump is making noise.  I assume the bearing for the pulley could be bad, but I was told a long time ago that if these pumps get clogged with carbon they will chatter.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi there smogger. As in my screen name , have a 93' coupe. And routine maintenance couple of yrs back . Took mine out and cleaned it up and oiled the brg. But mine wasn't making any noise either. I have read on other forums that guys take it out ( pump) and block off lines to get a few more horses , but I trying to leave mine as original as possible, I didn't find mine hard to remove. Good luck

For those who followed my problem with a noisy smog pump on my '88 vette Targa 5.7L, I removed the pump and disassembled it and found the rear bearing had gone dry.  Before I went out and spent over a hundred dollars, I thought, what the heck, I've got it apart now so I re greased the bearing with a high temp lube, reassembled it, and WA LA!  It's as quiet as it was before.  I hope this helps others.  Keep It Real!!
