I'm wondering if a synthetic oil would be good to use in my engine. it only has 17,000+ miles. and it been sitting most of its life. the motor is all original and never has been a part. still has the original plugs wires and water pump just about everything i can think of. the motor is 29 years old L83 built in 1983. i have changed out all my fluids. put back in reg oil. 5w30.Val... ac delco filter.my question would be this since my engine is old with such low mileage would running a synthetic oil hurt it. note after changing all the fluids and running the car for 500 miles, there isn't any oil leaks or coolant leaks or trans leaks at all. other wise no leaks. thank god for that.

I was at the Corvette corral at a race at Mid Ohio a few years ago and asked the Mobil1 rep the same question. He said it doesn't hurt anything.

with the molecular composition of the synthetic oil it may show a leak where conventional oil wont. only way to know would be to try it. if nothing shows up you should be ok.
