In case there are other members facing this problem I will up date what I did to eliminate code 36. I replaced both relays related to the MAF sensor and purchased a new MAF for 93 dollars. I installed the new MAF it took a while for the control unit to adjust to the new MAF but after a few minutes it idled fine.  Took it for a ride all was good shut car off and restarted and the code came back. I decided to clean the old MAF with MAF cleaner.  I let it dry for 2 days and installed all is good no code and car runs has it did prior to code36.  The car always ran fine it just threw a code.  Lesson learned I should have cleaned the MAF first. I now have a new MAF that did not get rid of code.  I hope this may help someone who is mechanically challenged like me. Take care!!! thanks for all the input!!!!

According to Loughmiller's "C4 Corvette Buyers Guide" code 36 is Opti Spark Ignition timing fail... he goes on to write about trouble  shooting it:"Ckeck connections at MAF, MAF relay and MAF burn off relay. Check coil resistance of MAF relay and MAF burn off relay with digital Ohmmeter. Replace if less than 18 Ohms. Possible  ECM  failure. The MAF sensor is located  ahead of the throttle body.

Enjoy your machine!
