ASR

The ASR prevents the wheels from spinning.  Does it also cause the engine to "bog" down and
the ASR comes on the dash and says ASR activated?  Should one drive with the ASR "off"

The ASR system will back the throttle off some. Earlier systems would actually physically shove the throttle pedal back. The '96 system, as far as I know, does it electronically, by changing the injector pulse. It will feel like the engine has lost some power. ASR will also apply the brake(s) on the spinning wheel.
If your ASR is activating that much, to where you want to turn it off, then either you have a heavy shoe, slick tires, you're driving on slick roads, or there is a problem with the system somewhere.
If you want to just do burnouts, or spin the tires when you take off or something, then it would be best to deactivate the system for that time, as it can wear the brake pads quickly if activated excessively.

HI rxpip, Got stuck in mud and when backing out ASR would come on and as I continued it would retard timing and fuel feed until the motor shut off. I would restart and with some local help pushing I finally got traction. Everything was fine and I'm had it on for the 20,000mi I've put on the car over the last two years. It's saved me several times taking slippery street corners in the rain. Snaps the rear right back under you. Love it. bagpipedave. Check the GS website for an excellent article on LT1 vs LT4.

Let me tell you what my 93 does. It will not only "bog" the engine but it will give positive feedback through the throttle pedal. She WILL do a full burn out with the ASR on if the pavement is cold or a little wet. The ASR on mine also will back the throttle off at .6g's. Never felt that in any other car I have had before. Just remember when the ASR is on if the conditions are correct she will spin. Example is when I was at full throttle getting onto an interstate on damp pavement. running 60mph sideways isn't to cool in traffic
