gm, recognized the transparent top in 84 was a high theft item. so the started to put the Vin numbers to the vette on the left or right conner of the top. your Vin number on your top should match your Vin number on your vette. that is if it's the original one that came with the car. they did this for all years up. the painted one was not a high thieft item it doesn't have the vin that the vette came with.

They started that with the '82 models, I think...but still a good idea.

Now I'm going to have to look. My 90 came with the two top option.
If it isn't broke, I haven't fixed it yet....

I checked my acrylic top last evening. It is serialized but no relationship to the VIN. Not even close to a vin format. I will check the hardtop tomorrow afternoon when I take it off.
The serial number is on the front edge of the frame, drivers side.
I've spoken to the previous owners and it is confirmed that the tops I have came with the car and the car shows the RPO for the two top option.
If it isn't broke, I haven't fixed it yet....

Like I said my acrylic top is serialized but does not seem to have any relationship to the VIN on the car.
The original owner says it's the top that came with the car. The car has the RPO for the two top option so the top was not purchased separately.
Don't know what to say on this.

I do think it interesting that I is serialized. The owners manual says to NOT carry the acrylic top in the cradle when using the hard top as it may warp in the heat. So, I would assume that there are a lot of acrylic tops hanging out in garages and carports, thus the number.
