My 89 had the LCD, my 91 doesn't (except for the little rectangular section in the middle of the cluster). I kind of miss it, you could choose which items to display.

The cluster changed in '90, with the "new" dash design.
The LCD cluster has been a problem since day one. The biggest problem has been loose/failed grounds to the cluster, as well as inside the cluster itself. IF the grounds check out well, then usually the cluster will need to be sent off for repair.
What kind of problems are you having?

joel is right my 90 doesn't have the lcd dash. kind of wish it did as i thought they were cool. i heard that gm changed them because they said people were having trouble reading them. don't know how true that is.

They changed them due to the re-design of the interior...or so they say.
Truth is, they were getting soooo many complaints from enthusiasts about the Star Wars gauges that didn't work very well to start with. So, they went to a semi-digital/analog gauge set-up that most people liked mo better.
The '84 clusters were dang near impossible to see in bright daylight, so they '85-up clusters were made a little brighter.
It's one of those good idea/poor execution deals, imho....
Also, to answer the second part of the original question, the clusters are not interchangeable.
