as some of you know my 90 was in an accident quite awhile ago. anyway, it is in the body shop and in the process of stripping it down as the whole car is going to be painted. in the process of installing the new roller bearings in the headlight motors as well as replacing the frames with ones from the donor car. will be painting them along with the black cover under the gas door.
we are taking off the black moulding that goes around the car. now here is the question i have. there is a product out called something like back to black which is supposed to restore the plastics on cars back to black. i was going to use this but then was told by someone that it looks great when you do it but it fades real quick leaving the plastic basically looking like it was never done. the other alternative is to paint them black. has anyone ever had any experience with the back to black and if so would you recommend it?
thanks dave

Dave, I don't think I've used that particular brand, but...I did try something like that once before. It looked otay for a little while, then the trim started turning white, like it had been waxed or something. I'd be real careful...maybe just do a small area and see what happens after a couple of days.
When they painted my '85, they just painted right over the trim, and made it body color....lazy jerks...
Now that I thunk aboot it, I thunk I still have the can of stuff in da garage. I'll look and see what the heck it is when I gits home this eve...

guess what i heard was right then.. said it looked great but wore off pretty quick. replacement cost isn't really reasonable either as just for the two doors it would be $350.00. talk to the guy at the body shop and he said that as long as we do it the right way we can paint them.
this is a good experience for me as i am helping to strip all the stuff off the car. it makes you realize that it is not as easy as it appears. it will also help with what i learn here on my other cars.

I used "Forever Black" side moulding dye from Corvette Central. It is a dye and have only used it twice in the last 2 years and lasts. It didnt fade out; I just gave it a 2nd coat. I used it also on the front air dam pieces and it works great. No fading or dicolouration so far.
