i have a 96 vette that i bought about 1 month ago. this is my first vette. just tonight when i went to run to the store it wouldn't start. all electrical came on, antenna rose up, headlights worked, heard a "whining" noise, tried to start and it wouldn't. tried 4 or 5 more times and it started without a problem. tried it again when i got home and same thing happened. can anyone tell me what to do ? this is frustrating. thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a loose connection at the starter, or possibly a neutral safety switch/clutch safety switch.
It does not "click" or anything when you turn the key to start?

If you're not hearing anything when key is in the start position (no "click" noise )....could be a VATS issue (anti theft system)...there is a resistor pellet in the key and contacts in the ignition switch which "read" the resistor in the key. Try your spare key and/or clean the pellet in the key w/alcohol or electrical contact cleaner.
As stated by the above members check basics first battery/battery connections --don't assume they are good check to be sure...electrical connections and grounds cause a lot of "gremlins" in these cars

Not really, just be careful to never damage it...but those components have to stay somewhat clean...no residuals, gunk, ect....
But it does happen...a pencil eraser is a simple cleaner.

If the key you are using has some age/usage on it and you don't have a spare....you might want to think about getting a new key cut and using the existing key for a spare. Over time from being inserted in and out of the lock cylinder... the "pellets" wear a bit and a new key will make better contact. A GM dealer should be able to make one OR many key making shops can measure the resistance of your existing key and cut you a new one. Obviously a spare is good idea anyway...'cause if the "one" gets lost figuring out what you need can be a PIA.....
