Okay the picture below is of a data plate on the frame of the actual 1978 Pace Car in the Indy Museum. I've inhanced it on Photoshop but still have a hard time reading the numbers. What do you all see?

Mark, of the few pics I took at Indy, I got a good one of that plate. Numbers are 6253, no enhancing necessary.

Mark, my guess is it says 6253 on both lines of the plate. Like you said, kinda hard to read. How does that correspond to the original pacer numbers??

[/QUOTE]Yep. which doesn't coinside with the oddball VIN that Pace Car is supposed to have.
Maybe it's the 6253rd item GM's given for educational purposes?

The numbers themselves really mean nothing, imho.
I believe the car was intended, built, and used for display purposes only...
I'd assume those numbers are simply a means of keeping tabs on the costs associated with the vehicle....basically an accounting number.
If you guys don't mind, I'll be happy to copy the pics, and show them to a couple of guys I know that may have some insight to the "logic" behind GM ways of doing things.
Noland Adams(yep..he's a cousin
) would prolly have an idea or two.
btw...where exactly IS this plate on the frame/car?Adams' Apple 2008-06-05 21:13:00

Joel, go for it.
That particular Pace Car was the prototype with some of the mods that the production pacers did not get. Blueprinted motor, dual exhaust. Reportedly used for a month prior to the race. Was the backup car to the actual pace car, no 0001. The VIN is a regular production 78 number, not a pace car number.
We were surprised to see that the VIN tag on the window pillar was removed!

One was on the frame by the rear bumper, one on the trans crossmember. Actually, it was more of a foil sticker.

Yup Mike's right, one up front on the cross member, one on the rear of frame near the bumper and they were just a foil sticker. I'd appreaciate it Joel if you could ask around for me, thanks
