Setting Timing

Does anyone have or know the step-by-step procedure for checking and/or setting the timing on an 82CE? Also, what should the setting be? I have read some articles but which setting is best? I'm asking only to make sure the engine is running at it's peak without add-ons or modifications to the stock engine.

peak timing is different on every engine.. once the car leaves the assmebly line there is no guaranteed absolute formula for timing. The timing set at the factory is generally fairly conservative. I usually time as high as I can go without detonation.

factors such as fuel quality, ambient temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, etc, etc, can affect detonation, and therefore peak timing.

I do initial timing to peak vacuum. then use springs and bushings to adjust the curve as far as I can go without detonation.

Specfications is 6 deg BTDC with both automatic and manual trans.
To set the timing, disconnect the 4 wire connector going to the bottom of the distributor, it's located near the distributor. This takes away the computor control of the timing. Engine warm at idle.
