Has anyone ever had to find out what code is setting off their check engine light without going to a service mechanic. I have the codes and how to read them. but am not sure :
(1) Is the terminal under the ashtray the right one for determing warning codes.

(2) Does anyone know how to figure which terminal is what ?? There not marked!!! |headscratch|

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
I teach this. The year of the car will show which connector you have. The connector will be black in color with all the pins in a straight row. Newer connectors are black with 12 pins in two rows of six.

Turn the key on to ignition, but don't start the car. If you have the 5 pin connector (likely on a C3 unless it's California or limited unusual production) jumper the two on one end next to each other, The other end may have a blank spot. If you jump the wrong end don't worry about it. Nothing will happen. It won't hurt anything. Jump the two on the other end.
Now watch the check engine light. It will flash a series of pulses or flashes. You will get a flash, slight hesitation, and two more flashes. The one and two is a code 12. Code 12 is normal, and just tells you the system is working. It will display code 12 three times. Then keep a close eye on the light. It will flash any more trouble codes, each one three times. When you get the 12 again, all codes have been displayed. If you get the 12 four times in a row, you have no stored codes.
Example, two flashes, hesitation, three flashes, longer hesitation and repeat, is a code 23.

Get codes, tell me the engine code and year, and I will give you the code description and help you through the diagnosis and repair.
