I have the same set up on my 72. I was getting to many looks from the local police so I ordered a set of collector inserts from Jegs, I have the two disk inserts and they take some of the harshness out of the pipes. They still sound off when you punch it out. You can get a three disk which will tone it down more.I just unbolted the clamps on the rear pipes by the differential and pounded the inserts into the pipes. |thumb| |saluteflag|

well ken i want to believe it means that we can get away with it, when i came home with the vette he said maybe i should investagate my daycare provider. today i was able to drive the vette in between clouds (good excuse) to four different shops, all wanted to sell me flowmaster, all frowned at the chambered system from mid american, except the shop that said that with the mufflers way in the back that i'd probably not get alot of sound from the flowmaster and he did offer to install anything that i brought in and then he suggested 12 inch glass pacs install at 40.00 each if i get the chambered from mid american is that something a REAL NOVICE could install ?????????

what kind of frowns ?

did they think it would sound bad ? or was it laziness shining through..

i wouldnt think that most muffler shops these days would know a thing about chambered exhaust.. perhaps they think youre more trouble than your worth (the common and possibly true reputation that corvettes themselves have)

selling you the same set of flowmasters they sell to every 16 yr old whose daddy just bought them a mustang is the easy way out.

you may think more work equals more money.. but that isnt necessarily true. they can spend half a day putting in your whole exhaust system to make X$ or they could put 5 sets of flowmasters and 5 rice-rocket "fart cans" on in that time and make 5X$.

not to denegrate anyone here with flowmasters... they have a good sound.. but here in AR at least every redneck with at least 3 teeth in his mouth has them on his pickup in addition to every mustang and camaro.

I hear 20 vehicles with flowmasters on my 7 mile drive to work every morning.

Well Put. Just as I stated in an earlier email. Everyone has Flow-Stangs!

I would also run the other away, very quickly, from an exhaust shop that suggested that they put GLASS PACKS on a corvette. What are they thinking. |withstupid|

You need to hit some local car shows and ask the owners where they got their exhaust done. Here in our town I look for the shops that the owners drive old muscle cars or who drag race. you can usually tell by the way they keep and the quality of their cars and their race cars what type of work they will perform. And if they can't do the work they can suggest a shop that can.

Don't be afraid to drive to a larger town to find just the right shop to do the work and don't be afraid to ask for references.

the shop I use has a bunch of older "pre-fad" harley's out front.

and AS and Ken are definitely right about glass packs being garbage.. especially 6 months down the road.

I used glass packs when i was 16 and poor..

do you have a local speed shop ?? if so call them and ask them where to go.

Wow, glass packs. They don't sound right to me. And they deteriorate to an entirely different sound. I don't care for them. Okay for a poor kid, but I just don't think they work on a Vette, or anything else for that matter. The shop is trying to sell you what they have and can make money on. That works with most people. I would pass.
Go with another shop. Just me.
Nothing wrong with flowmaster, except they are the most common sound. I don't have that problem in my area as much as some other areas. BUT Summit racing is only 5 1/2 miles from my house, so if I spent more times at cruise ins and such, I may see a lot of them.

i got to thinking about my reply and it I don't everyone to think that I hate flowmasters. They have a good reputation for being a well constructed performance muffler. I know alot of the members on this site have them, rave about them, and wouldn't run anything else.

I was just expressing my opinion. I think a lot of people have the habit of Monkey See Monkey do. I have never been one to follow a group, but rather find my own way. I think the Flowmasters sound good I just don't care to hear them on every muscle car out there. I like a deeper rumble, not such a raspy sound. Hope I'm not tripping over my own you know what.
