How much water is supposed to come out of the weep hole in the water pump? A few years ago (probably only 200 miles or so) I replaced my water pump. Before installing it I painted it Chevy orange. I have everything apart again because I am doing my timing chain. Noticed that all the paint is flaking off on the bottom of the pump by the weep hole. Is it OK to reuse this pump? Mileage wise, it's brand new and the engine it's cooling is basically stock. I was just going to repaint and put it back on. Any suggestions for a more effective painting method?

There should be NO leakage at the weep hole. That hole is there only to keep from having a vacuum in between the pump seals and the front bearing. Any leakage out of that hole indicates the wp seals are not sealing.
IS the paint simply coming off due to a bad paint job, or is there evidence of leakage? If it IS leaking, it should be replaced...mileage is no indication of a good pump, and it's much easier to fix it now than it will be once you get it all back together, and waaaay easier than trying to replace it on the road somewhere...

It could be a bad paint job, but it looks like there is a trail of corrosion from the weep hole on down and only the paint near that corrosion is flaking off. The pic shows it pretty well - I already scraped off most of the flaking paint.

Any thoughts as to why? Did I just get unlucky or do something wrong? Guess it's not the end of the world, lots more expensive parts can fail, it's just I've been on a spending spree lately with this car and it adds up quickly

It may have just been a pump that wasn't properly assembled, or had an iffy seal to start with. It happens.

The guy's are right. It needs replace. Owning a cooling system business every once in a while I will get a reman that leaks, so a do-over is necessary.
That's why I spend a little extra for new. Sometimes the price difference isn't that much. Its worth paying a little x-tra $ to avoid headaches. "T"

Yep, I'm going to replace it. I don't think it was a reman, though. I just looked on AdvanceAuto parts and a
GMB New Water Pump
is only $32.00. I found my old receipt and that's about what I spent last time. I haven't even seen any remans in my various searches. Am I buying what I think is new and actually getting a reman?

I have used Advance Auto pumps and haven't had a problem that I can remember. You should be fine.

We only sell the original GM pumps. That way we know we will not have a problem. They are more expensive, but if you consider the work in replacing a bad one, I think well worth it. I assume you know you should either use anti-freeze or a coolant traetment in you system at start-up.

Took a chance and went with another GMB. I had saved the receipt (turns out it was actually five years ago) and it had a lifetime warranty. Local parts store took the old one in on warranty. Hopefully this one works out better than the last....
