I recently purchased a 73 454 Stingray from my aunt and uncle. I had to replace the fuel tank and now when I fill the fuel tank to 3/4 to full the vapor separator mounted on the fuel tank begins to leak. I have attempted to locate a new vapor separator but haven't been able to find one. One company instructed me to plug the hole and install a vented fuel cap. Will this work? Does anybody have a spare vapor separator that they would be willing to part with?

I had the same thing happen in my '74. I found one out at Pacific Corvette for $150, used. The only problem is that this "used" part may last one week OR two years. What I did to "fix" mine was remove it(the bottom where it is heat sealed together came apart), and just made a loop of new fuel line go high up to deck lid heigth, near the antenna base. This "high loop" won't let the fuel go "up", so it does act as a "vapor seperator", the only downside is the original vapor seperator also acted as "check valve" IN CASE OF A ROLLOVER, the gas would'nt comeout should the car remain upside down. I did mine this way over a year ago and it has'nt leaked a drop of gas yet. One thing you have to do is "reduce" it from a 5/16" nipple(outlet of tank, rubber fuel line size) down to 1/4" line size(your steel vapor line size on driver's side of frame). I had like a rubber tube "sheath" that fit over the 1/4" line, then the 5/16" rubber line fit over this. Then tightened with a small worm gear clamp. Remember, should your car "rollover" fuel will continue to come out with this set-up. Until someone reproduces this part and it's kind of a bad design being "plastic", it eventually AGES, comes apart and leaks, I'll leave mine this way. So much for GM Safety-Remember the Ford Pinto

Thanks for the info. I'm like you, I don't want to pay $150 for a used peice of 1970's plastic. It would probably only last a week anyway. This is my first Corvette and I'm surprised that nobody has made an aftermarket separator after seeing all the parts that are available. I am going to try the vented fuel cap and plug the port and hope that works. If I still have problems then I'll try the same method that you have engineered. Thanks for taking the time to reply and Happy Holidays!
