yes and this restricts the flow of air.. you dont want to cool your transmission at the expense of your engine.

if you didnt have air and your engine cooling was ok then adding it in front might be ok..

but I think adding it with air would be counter productive

Well I removed the huge condenser and installed a much smaller one for my a/c conversion. also the cooler I got is pretty small also. They both fit side by side and still consume less space than the old condenser took up. I also got a large four core radiator installed. as it stands the engine never goes above 180 degrees so far. When I did the engine swap, I put a lot of effort and money to make sure my cooling system for the engine is in top condition. My trans running hot, I suspect, is the misrouted lines and a high stall converter. I am gonna switch my lines, drive it for an hour and see where my temp is, then I'll decide if I need the trans cooler in. Thanks cthulhu and kstyer for the help.

Placement can be tricky. In front of the radiator is great for the trans cooler. Any heat does go to the radiator and somewhat reduce cooling. This may be fine, and may cause problems. Anywhere else and you don't have as much air flow throught the cooler, and it won't work as well. Always tradeoffs. If you cooling system works well, I would try it in front of the radiator, but watch the engine temp. Also keep in mind that placement may encourge stone hits, and damage.
