I was at a show Saturday 7/10 and saw an '82 and an '81 with sidepipes, with the fiberglass covers. IMO, this looks great. Anyone here have this done?
1. What can I expect to pay?
2. Any problems with the engine/carb?
3. Just use the internal baffle mufflers?
4. Anyone in the Central PA area I can talk to about this?
Thanks...

Better be careful changing the exhaust and converter system with a car less than 25 years old. It won't fall under historic registration rules and run afoul of state and EPA emissions regulations.

Unless you have collector plates. But they have the same limitation as historic plates. Over 25 years old it does not matter which plates, you can legaly modify it.

I just had mine inspected and was told that with PA Classic plates, which I have, I am exempt from emissions inspection. I still would like to know what might be involved with installing sidepipes, if only to satisfy my curiosity...

I have a set of gm side pipes on my 68, new they will cost you about 3000, with covers and mufflers. Aftermarket will be less. You have to take off your lower "panels", and then the side pipes should bolt directly to your exhaust manifolds. If you get hooker side pipes or something like that you must also buy their headers.

I'm in the process of adding Hooker sidemount headers & pipes to my 74. As for covers there are some nice ones
on the site listed below.
I went with the satin finish ones. I'll post some pics as soon as they're on.

They'll fit a pipe up to 4" in diameter.

Todd at jet hot coatings tells me that a triple exterior coating on the actual side pipes prevents leg burns on the hooker pipes..
if you get a set of hooker pipes from them it is $1156 shipped for a coated lifetime set. to triple coat the exterior costs 80$ extra.
they basically buy the $850+ black set from hooker and coat them both inside and out.
this is cheaper than you can get the fairly plain looking hooker ceramic coated headers for.. and the temperature reduction is greater.
the silver coating from jet hot is not quite as shiny as chrome.. but unlike the $1600+ chrome set from hooker they wont turn blue after 2 hours of operation either.
something to think about with the hooker pipes.

I recently got a set from Jet Hot. Didn't know about the triple coating or I probably would have had that done. But they look great!! Haven't put them on yet because I'm still rebuilding the suspension. I was having a tough time debating between getting SS, Chrome, or JetCoated...but in the end it seemed like the Jet coating was more beneficial and also a lot cheaper.
