I learned me an imortant lesson this weekend. If yer lectric fan has a sensor at 180 degrees and you have a 160 degree thermostat, yer fan wont stop a runnin!! The 160 closes again at about 150 so it never really closes and the fan just keeps a runnin cuz the water aint a gittin that cool and the thermostat hangs open......I swithced my thermostat tonite and hopin this cures the problem.

If you have a 180* fan sensor, then the fan is supposed to run anytime the temp gets above that temp, regardless of the thermostat calibration. Of course, if there is a prollem with the thermo, then that could cause the fan to run all the time too....but it don't make sense if the engine temp is 160*
now I'm cornfused....again...

Lets just say if having a 180 stat and a 180 sensor help the fan cycle instead of running constantly, I bees a happy fool!! LukesVette Homepage

Paul, the fan sensor has a high & low limit, fans come on at high limit and turn off at low limit. Your thermostat should be below the low limit.

I think 180 turn on temp. is too low. Mine turns on at 200 and off at 185, my thermostat is 180.
Drive the car without the fans on and see what the normal operating temp is. Your fans should come on just above that and turn off about 15 degress less.
My fans only come on when in traffic for awhile, never on the highway. I have a manual switch so I can turn them on when my A/C is on so there is always air flowing over the A/C condensor, but you don't have to worry about that.

dave is right about the temp of stat. made the mistake of not switching the stat when i installed my fans. then realizes the problem and corrected it. my fans turn on about 200 and off about 185 (numbers are close). the original stat was 195 on my 75. as with dave my fans dont always come on unless it is really hot outside.

Took a ride tonight with the 180 stat. - fans still kicking on around 160 and staying on. maybe I should go to a 195 Sensor and stay with the 160 stat. Thoughts?

What is the on temp. and off temp. on the sensor? Didn't they come with a schematic? If yours are coming on at 160 you may have them wired wrong, thats way to low to be turning on.

they do make different sensors for the fans. i remember you had the fans before the new engine--do you remember when it came on then. if it was right before maybe dave is right about being wired wrong or more than likely the sensor is bad or was wrong to begin with. i would see if i could get a new sensor for it.
just another thought here--how accurate is the temp guage you are going by. best thing would be to check the temp of the engine with an infared thermometer.

Wired the same as it was with the 327. Operated normally. I'll check the paperwork on the relay and let yous guys know.
