Replacing the fuel line from pump to carb

While tinkering under the hood I noticed that the steel fuel line from the pump to the carb was crimped badly.  Looks like whoever changed the fuel filter last time used a hammer to get the fuel line off.  I was unable to get the fitting loose from the carb, so I thought I would replace the fuel line from the pump to the carb.  Mistake #1.

Broke the line loose at the pump and undid the carb, and realized that the line snakes under the a number of lines and brackets.  My questions are:

1) Is it possible to replace this line without lifting the engine?

2) Am I an idiot to try it?

3) Any ideas or suggestions to make this task slightly less difficult?

If it's like the one in my 78,I took it out when I changed my fuel pump. with the pump out of the way it came out FAIRLY easy,you have too twist it around a little to pull it up through to the top of the engine.I did have the A.C. compressor out of the way and the mounting bracket off at the time ,you may have to do it too.I only pulled it out to check it and make sure it was'nt rusted and bent anywhere,and had'nt been rubbing on anything,cleaned it up and put it back on.No you are'nt an idiot for trying,and no you dont have to pull the engine
