Radiator Frame

Hey on the 70 conv I thought I had the wrong radiator in it because the radiator look to small for the radiator frame and It had to 2 thin sheet metal plats on it each side of the frame to close in the radiator. All of the pictures that I have seen did not show this. On my 70 coup it's totally different. So I took out the frame took off the 2 sheets and bought a new radiator. To my surprise the car had the right radiator in it. So the question is this are the 2 thin sheet medal plates that I took off suppose to be there? It has the medal fan shroud.
