The number should be stamped into the body casting of the carb. It should be very visible with the air cleaner off.

It does matter for a couple of reasons...different calibrations and jetting for cam specs, automatic or manual transmissions, whether it has a/c, etc. Get the wrong one, even if it's in perfect operating order, will not work optimally, though it would certainly work and the car run.

That doesn't even include whether you want the car "numbers matching". It's more to make sure the engine runs properly.

Eric,

Both are correct for a base 350 w/ auto trans.  The 202 is the 1st design & the 212 is the 2nd design.

You'll have to check an NCRS Judging Manual to determine @ what VIN# the change was made.

I'll try to get a better answer soon, hopefully Joel will know.

Hi Thanks for the info, I am not worried about any judgements on strict originality...I do want it to funnction correctly though. I can get my VIN if that will determin wheather I should have the first design or second design carb, but, I realy just want it to run nice. I am also gonna need the choke coil and rod, The car currantly has a carter ABF carb on it and it has a rough idle and the air cleaner does not fit correctly, If I could get an aircleaner to fit halfway decent and fit under the hood and adjust the idle enough so that it does not sound as if it is gonna stall I almost would be happy driving it as is for now,PROVIDING I could get it to idle better! ANY HELP IS WELCOME  THANKS GUYS!!!!!!

It may have a performance camshaft......hence, rough idle.

Looks like the 202 was used until March of 1970 in production, then they switched to the 212.  From what I can tell, the last VIN produced in March of '70 was 407977, so based on your VIN, you should be able to determine which one you need.

I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!

Eric,

I just heard from a guy that has a July built '70 that has a Carter built Quadrajet that is numbered 7040202 FO DH.

The 212 appears to be listed in NCRS books only.  It is not listed in the book of Rochester carb #'s.

Hope this doesn't confuse you any more.

Anthony

I have a older carb application/kit cross-reference book out in da garage...somewhere. I'll be happy to go and look for it, and see if the info you seek is there.
Might be a while...if I'm not back in a few days, call the authorities!
I'm goin in...
