Carb tuning takes time but well worth it. Don't forget to make sure that the choke is coming off.

I think I found It! Really! I really think I found the problem once and for all!!!
Recently I put on a new (used from a friend) air cleaner. It's non stock and is open all the way around. It also has a flat bottom which slightly intereferes with the operation of the pivot arm that controlls the accelarator pump. This in turn causes the rod to the accelarator pump to fight the upward motion due to the resistance caused by the bottom of the air cleaner.
With the air cleaner off- no problem.
With the air cleaner on- "Q-Jet Cough"
I'm not an accomplished mechanic by any means but I found an interuption in what should otherwise be a smooth operation.
Any more input is welcome!

Not the first time I have seen that with an aftermarket air cleaner. Glad you found it.

So Kevin, should I bring my air cleaner with me to the show?

Really, I still have it so let me know if you want it.

I had to put a 1/2" spacer (Mr Gasket) under my aftermarket breather, did earlier realize you had a different breather, if you want to use the aftermarket one this spacer will work for you and it cheap.

John,
I took a look at those a few days ago but worried about hood clearance, so I held off.
It's lookin' like DaveM's generosity will solve this little problem soon enough. (We should be meetin' up at a nice car show this Sunday in Staatsburgh, N.Y.)
Good info, though. Thanks.

Just for tech info....It allows for about 3/4" clearance with the GM bow tie on top, I haven't had any problems with the ones I have installed...yet, Dave's will be better

I have to admit, I have an aftermarket air cleaner which created the same problem. I used my body hammer and created a dimple that allows the clearance for the pump linkage.

I have to admit, I thought about hittin' my aftermarket air cleaner with a hammer, too. I think I was after different resluts at the time, though.

Hey, I'm no worse for the wear. I get a kick out of learning about this kind of thing
Before I joined this site about all I could do was check the earl.
