Could someone send me a picture of the their Q-Jet Choke assm, specifaly the coil and rod. I have a 427 with a single q-jet and just ordered a new coil and rod on the request of my carb guy after he stated the choke assm on my car was wrong and the new parts are the same as what I already have. If no pictures, maybe a web site that will show/explain what this should be.Thanks

Yours apparently has the coil in the manifold with a rod that connects to the choke? I think most have the coil on the side of the carb with tubes running to the manifold for hot exhaust air, or an electric choke. Not sure where you can get those, but at least this is a TTT for you.

What is your choke doing or not doing as the case may be? Is the spring on the manifold? Let me know and perhaps I can help.

Ken,
I have the coil type choke attached to the intake mainfold with a rod running up to the choke. This carb will not idle at all when cold. I ordered a new coil and rod which is the same as I have installed. Do I install the coil as is, or wind it tighter to pull the rod down towards the manifold. I tried this last night and the car would idle without any gas pedal. I found this web site that shows a rod adjustment by bending the rod. I am very confused about this. http://vetteworks.tripod.com/Qjet.htm

You don't wind up your choke themostat coil, it's preset. When you set your choke by pushing your gas pedal to the floor and let up your choke should be closed and there should some tension on your choke plate.Thats good. When your motor starts the Vacuum Choke Pull Off opens your choke plate a little giving the cold motor more air so it won't choke itself out.You will see it open some when the engine starts. Set your high idle to specs.Check your Vacuum Choke Pull Off it may be your problem.

Yes they are preset, and the rod is bent to adjust. No tech will ever do it that way.
We rotate the choke coil. Usually it gets rotated counterclockwise to set the choke tighter. This means it will close sooner. Or in your case, close at all.
With the car cold, rotate the coil until the choke place is closed, with the throttle held about 1/2 way open. This keep the fast idle cam from hanging it up.
When the car warms up, if it opens too fast, it will bog and maybe stall. If it's too tight, it won't open fast enough and stay on fast idle too long.
A little trial and error can be in order, but that is true of the rod bending as well. And the rod if far more difficult to adjust, get right, and tweak to perfection. Moving the coil is far easier.

With all the help I may have solved the choke. The problem stems from the fact that I believe that Rochester made one carb for a BB Corvette # 7029215. I, on the other hand have a Q-jet 7029201 which was used on 350/396/. The coil on the 7029215 winds different than the 7092201. I've been trying to get the true Corvette Q-jet coil to work on my carb. This weekend I will take the coil I have and flip it over and try again. I know I've beaten this to death, but I have been frustrated over this 'little' problem since I got this car. Thanks for everyones help and patience
