I am thinking of changing my mufflers on my 81, I now have Dynamax mufflers on it and purchased them from Mid America about 10 years ago,  I have a custom made exhaust on the 81 no Cats.  I am looking for a louder exhaust sound,  I am thinking of flowmasters or another brand.  I want them to fit like the stock ones , dont want to see any mufflers hanging down.  Does anyone out there have flowmasters on there vet.  If so would appreciate any suggestions one might have.  Thanks

I have Flowmasters installed on 74' along with the entire system by Meineke Muffler. This is how they look and sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At_YABquE4Y They may sound a bit different at idle based on your cam and idle speed. As stated they are not your loudest mufflers but they do have that aggressive sound and they will let you hear inside when running down the highway.

sippy,
I have flowmasters on my '78.  Ther were no cats on my car when I got it and no pollution control at all.  I have custom bent piping.  The Flowmaster are not the loudest, but you can sense them coming for quite a distance.  The base must be what people feel/sense.  I have the flat mufflers, so you see very little of the muffler from behind.  I use 'BUSCH' aluminum polish on the mufflers, especialy the back end and they SHINE.  I like to keep the back end of my car clean because that is what most people see (at least in my mind that is what they see as I fly by).  Actually becasue of the gearing/transmission in mine, I get passed a LOT while on the freeway.  Either way, I keep them polished.  so I a mvery happy with my flowmasters because of the base.

I have a pair of Magnaflow polished stainless mufflers on my '75 with Hedman HTC long tube headers. Very deep sound at idle or when cruising around and the car just roars when you open it up. I get lots of compliments on the sound. Big smile

I have aluminum "Cherry Bombs" in the stock muffler shape and mounting on my '81 and they sound great. The installer has everything to do with the visibility factor so make sure you emphasize your desires to the technician doing the job.

I like the sound of the Magnaflows best.
When I had 'em on my '79 with true dual exhaust they sounded real nice. Even with the lower compression from my L-48 motor, the sound was good.
Let us know what you decide on.

I too have Magnaflows and am definitely happy with the sound.  I think they sound a bit more retro/period-correct (which I like) than some of the other modern-day brands.  I think they sound good from behind, but especially enjoy the sound while driving (where it matters, right Big smile)!

I used a kit from Corvette Central - 2 1/2" with true duals and no cats.  For '75 and up they bill it as an "off-road only" kit.  I installed it myself 5 or so years ago without too much trouble although I did just recently have an exhaust shop tweak one side a bit since it was hanging low and they welded all the joints while they were under there.
