I had the same problem. I wanted to replace all the hoses when I flushed the radiator. I couldn't find one with a spring in it. I even ordered one from Ecklers and asked the specific question "does it come with a spring?". They said yes, hose arrived with no spring. I sent the hose back and kept the original one. I've been told you can remove the spring from your old hose but I haven't tried it.

Guess I just got lucky!!
I bought one last month from NAPA simply because I was replacing the radiator and wanted new hoses. It had the spring in it. I never expected otherwise...

I got mine from napa, too. No spring. My old one was pretty nasty, but I should have cleaned it and kept it.

Sorry for the slow reply. It took a while to locate the tag. The 'Gates' part number is: 20812. That one has the spring and is a direct fit for a '76.

What's the idea of the spring anyway? I can only assume it's supposed to stop the hose collapsing? I had a burst lower radiator hose over a year ago, and rather than wait for a replacement (I live in the UK, and hadn't sorted out any decent suppliers at that point), I ended up splicing two "suitable" hoses together with a short piece of copper pipe and two jubilee clips..... Never had any trouble with that fix. (OK, I know it's a bit of a bodge, but it worked
) My point being that I've been ok with no spring so far....
I don't like the idea of having a rusty spring hanging around the bottom of my radiator - or are they galvanised or something?
Anyone want to enlighten me?

The spring keeps the hose from collapsing during higher revs. The sound that the hose makes when it collapses is very weird. I'm not sure if the spring is galvanized or not, but it SHOULD be...
