I'm trying to fire up some heat in my '78 L-82 w/AC. Does anyone know if the control valve on the heater hose leading in to the heater core should be open or shut when there is vacuum applied?

Joe, I believe the valve is closed by the presence of vacuum and without vacuum it is open allowing water to flow.

Thanks Chip, It seems that the valve is stuck shut, so for now I will take it out and re-join the hoses with a piece of straight tubing. We've had some cool mornings here in central VA!

The no-heat problem was not the control valve being stuck. Someone decided to loop the heater hoses in and out of the valve to bypass the heater core. This is what I found underneath:
Looks like a "fun" job to get the core hooked up again, but I will flush it and pressure-test it first!

Odds are very good that the reason they did that was because the heater core leaked. Mine is like that too because of leaking core. Winter project

Joe be really careful taking off the old hoses..try and cut them along the heater core pipes so you can take the old hoses off in pieces..don't try and twist them off..chances are it could crack the core solder joints or pipes if you do..don't ask me how I know.

Thanks for the advice Dan and Rich. For now I might just get a personal space heater from Walmart and a DC power inverter. Or maybe a bottle of "personal antifreeze"!
